Minipresso and Halfwit Coffee: Colombia Guanacas
May’s coffee beans come from Halfwit Coffee Roasters, a passionate team of former baristas based in Chicago, Illinois. We love the bag design — it’s also 100% compostable — and we love the flavor profiles of the espresso we brewed using our Minipresso. This weeks blend is Colombia Guanacas!
"Origin: Beans from the remote village of Guanacas in the Cauca Department of Colombia; roasted and packed in Illinois, USA"
Before the Brew: Can scents have a soundtrack? Opening this bag was like hitting play on the tune “April in Paris.” The coffee beans gave off a silky vibe akin to the voice of a smooth jazz crooner, and the scents took us on a stroll through blossoming tree-lined streets. Light, fruity notes like apricot or perhaps Bartlett pear, as mentioned on the package, came through as well. “I would wear this scent as a cologne, if I could,” said George.
Minipresso Tasting: We had a few family members over for a Minipresso demo and espresso tasting. For a brief moment, Beth worried that the lovely burnt siena shade meant that she had under-extracted her espresso shot due to faulty handwork with the Minipresso. One look at the crema restored her confidence, as it coated the edges of her cup much like legs in a wine glass. The ‘bouquet’ in the Halfwit espresso contained light floral notes and a hint of peach. Both the connoisseurs and novices in our group picked up on the creamy, butterscotch-like sweetness and a mild, blueberry-like acidity in our respective espresso shots.
